SBEVSL Presentations at ACA 2007

Brett Hanson and Charlie Westin from RIT and Herbert J. Bernstein from Dowling College attended the summer 2007 meeting of the American Crystallographic Association in Salt Lake City Utah from 21 to 27 July 2007. This is a report on the aspects of their attendance that relate to the SBEVSL project.

On 22 July 2007, Brett Hanson presented "ProMOL: Simplification and Increased Functionality of PyMOL" in session SP.01, Undergraduate Research Showcase [B. Hanson, C. Westin, L. Slatest, P. Craig, "ProMOL, Simplification and Increased Functionality of PyMOL," presentation at session SP.01.06, American Crystallographic Association Meeting, 21-26 July 2007, Salt Lake City Utah, abstract W044]. Prior to the talk, 25 people were in the room, at the start of the talk attendance quickly rose to 35 and by the end of the talk was over 40. The audience showed a strong interest in the presentation, asking several questions. Discussion continued after the close of the session. The talk was very well received and Brett Hanson won an AIP award, which was presented at the ACA awards dinner.

Brett Hanson and Charlie Weston presented poster TP172, "SBEVSL Structural Biology Extensible Visualization Scripting Language PyMOL to and from SBEVSL". [C. Westin, B. Hanson, H. J. Bernstein, I. Awuah Asiamah, D. Boycheva, G. Darakev, N. Darakev, J. Jemilawon, N. Jia, P. Kamburov and G. Todorov, P.A. Craig, S. Mottarella, "SBEVSL: Communicating Scripts Between Molecular Visualization Programs," poster TP172, Crystallographic Association Meeting, 21-26 July 2007, Salt Lake City Utah, abstract E0003] The formal presentation was scheduled for Tuesday, but discussion started informally on Sunday. The formal Tuesday presentation drew interest and positive comment. The idea of a common scripting language appears to be of some interest to the community.

Herbert Bernstein presented poster TP174 on "Support for Maps in RasMol," [H. J. Bernstein, I. Awuah Asiamah, G. Darakev, J. Jemilawon, P. Kamburov, "Support for Maps in RasMol," poster TP174, American Crystallographic Association Meeting, 21-26 July 2007, Salt Lake City Utah, abstract W0059.] Much of the discussion at the poster the concerned general issues of a common scripting language and about CBFlib and CCP4 map formats and related software issues.
